Sheriff Chuck Heit graduated from New Buffalo High School in 1987.  He then went on to Central Michigan University where he majored in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice.  He graduated from the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy in 1992.  His law enforcement career began in the City of Buchanan in February of 1993 and he then moved to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office in December of 1993.  In 1999 he accepted the position as Chief of Police for the City of New Buffalo where he served from 1999 to 2002.  In January of 2003 he was appointed Undersheriff for the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office where he served for 21 years.  Upon the retirement of Sheriff Paul Bailey he was appointed the Sheriff of Berrien County effective January 1, 2024

Sheriff Heit served on the New Buffalo School Board for 21 years and is a past president of both New Buffalo and St Joseph Lions Club. He is a graduate of the 247th session of the FBI National Academy.
